Thursday morning

Patricia and I were up at the hospital with Troy this morning....along with Herman, Ronnie, Sally, and Jane.....and some friends popping in frome time to time. Troy continues to be comforted by everyone at Fairfax, and he's been able to meet with some of the specialists today.

The most informative meeting , in my mind anyway, was with the Neurologist. He has ordered an MRI of Hyatt's brain for today -- something she hasn't had done yet. It should show much more definitively any brain damage, where the CT scan wouldn't necessarily have been that granular. Based on observing Hyatt's phyical responses, I think he is expecting to see such damage -- and if he doesn't, then other tests he's planning (e.g., an electrical impulse test) would hopefully help them understand what's going on.

They're not trying to get anyone overly optimistic about small observations (and I think their most likely diagnosis of Hyatt remains somewhat dire), but he did tell us of something that surprised him during his examination. He said when he touched her and called her from one side, her eyes looked over toward that side; and when he walked around the bed and repeated this on the other side, her eyes again looked toward him. He said this could be an indication of some higher-level brain activity, and something that hasn't been noted or observed before today. By the way, Troy's friend Allen told me the same thing this morning -- that Hyatt's eyes followed him walking across her room, when he stopped by to visit her before work.

Around the time we left, Hyatt was physically stressing somewhat, and the nurse thinks her stimulation needs to go way down; she's not letting visitors in to see her right now, and has turned down the lights to get Hyatt to relax. We've seen this on and off over the last few days; she was off sedatives last night and this morning so that the Neurologists could do their best assessment.

I was fortunate enough to get to know Hyatt our final year of high school. Outside of her numerous talents, I fondly remember Hyatt as someone who would treat you with the respect you deserved no matter who you were, or where you were from. I can confidently say that in high school she was liked by everyone she came in contact with and more importantly, was a genuinely good person that always handled herself and her many accomplishments with a great deal of humility.

Thank you for posting this publicly. It pains me greatly to see Hyatt and her family having to endure this. Our family and others here in the SC upstate will be keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

I just wanted you all to know that my thoughts and prayers are with Hyatt, Troy, the girls, and their families. I am a friend of Kent and Janet Hymel (who went to church with them before the Hymels moved). Kent shared this story with my parents who have shared it now with me. May God richly bless you all.

Hyatt: Sometimes the smallest moments hold the greatest meaning. We'll cherish the tiny peek that you took at the neurologist today. As I read the last blog, a wave of happiness poured into my heart. WE ARE ALL PRAYING FOR A MIRACLE, DEAR HYATT. Know that our love surrounds you always.

Troy - I am a friend of one of the moms in the bristow moms and kids group. I have been following Pete's blog and am thinking of your family and wondering how I can help. I saw a dog in some of the pictures you posted. My husband and I own Dogtopia of Manassas and would be happy to have your dog come to the store for daycare and to be pampered. We are available to you anytime you might need us. We hope to be able to help in this way so please don't hesitate to call.

I am a Mom at Sidney's preschool and I received a letter today telling us about Hyatt. I am praying for you, your children and your family. It sounds as if you are in wonderful, caring hands from your friends and family. Please know that there are many people who have not met Hyatt or her family but are praying HARD for a miracle. God Bless Hyatt and God Bless you and your children. With Him you will get through this very difficult time. Keep the Faith! The Lord does work Miracles.

Miracles Happen. I have a dear friend who was robbed and beaten so badly at the back of the head that he was in a coma for 3 months - with a brain injury. He had his last rights said 2 or 3times and finally a miracle happened! We all prayed and prayed for it!
We hope and we pray each and every day!
